Basketball and Swim Camp

Program: Basketball and Swim Camp

Position/Title: Assistant Coach (Basketball and Swim)

Duration: Monday-Friday 9am-5pm

Organization: The Kings Bay YM-YWHAis a non-sectarian multi-service Jewish community center that serves Sheepshead Bay, Homecrest, Midwood, Bergen Beach and Mill Basin neighborhoods of Brooklyn, New York.  As the largest not-for-profit organization in the area, the Kings Bay Y offers social, cultural, educational and recreational services to people of all ages.

Program Description: The Basketball and Swim Camp is for children ages 6 to 14 years old.  In the Basketball portion of the program children learn technical training in the game of basketball, basic skills and drills, and participate in exciting events.  In the Swim portion of the program children will receive individual and group swim instruction on stroke and swimming skill development. The camp emphasizes physical fitness through daily exercise and daily lessons targeted to specific skills.

General Camp Responsibilities:

  • Provide a warm and welcoming facility where children can feel safe and nurtured.
  • Participate in all activities with the participants.
  • Provide guidance for all activities that stimulate mind and body development.
  • Help ensure the daily recreation and positive experience of everyone.

Basketball Responsibilities:

  • Assist in skill building: dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense.

Swim Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in skill building: breast stroke, backstroke, diving,

Summer Day Camp

Program: Summer Day Camp

Position: Film & Production

Duration: Monday-Friday 10am-4pm

Program Description: The Kings Bay Y believes that camp is a positive experience and can be life changing.  Our goal is to offer a genuine, fun and meaningful camp experience. The campers are divided into small groups divided by age and participate in swimming daily; basketball, volleyball, soccer; gymnastics, aerobics, dance, music; arts and crafts, drawing; Israel and Jewish cultural programming; overnight trips and sleepovers, talent shows, Olympics competitions; outdoor sports and activities. 

Interns will report to Volunteer and Communications Coordinator and Camp Director.  Interns will meet with Volunteer and Communications Coordinator weekly to review script and timeline of video projects. 

Responsibilities:

  • Concept development
  • Scripting
  • Camera work
  • Editing
  • Produce a total of 4 videos ranging 1.5-3 minutes long, biweekly for 10 weeks

Background/Skills:

  • Graduate or Undergraduate Majoring in Film or Media Studies
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Final Cut Pro knowledge is a plus
  • Ability to complete projects quickly, accurately and with attention to detail
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at one time

Chavaya

Program: Chavaya

Position/Title: After School Assistant Counselor

Duration: Monday-Friday, 4:00pm-7pm,

Organization: The Kings Bay YM-YWHAis a non-sectarian multi-service Jewish community center that serves Sheepshead Bay, Homecrest, Midwood, Bergen Beach and Mill Basin neighborhoods of Brooklyn, New York.  As the largest not-for-profit organization in the area, the Kings Bay Y offers social, cultural, educational and recreational services to people of all ages.

Program Description: The after school programs are for children ages 5 to 13 years attending the Hebrew Language Academy.  Activities include advanced homework assistance, swimming three times a week, reinforced education on Jewish traditions and cultural activities, and several special events.

Responsibilities:

  • To ensure daily and safe arrival of participants.
  • Provide a warm and welcoming facility where children can feel safe and nurtured.
  • To provide recreational activities in a safe and nurturing environment.
  • Participate in all activities and enrichment programs with the participants.
  • Ensure all unusual or erratic behavior is reported to supervisor & Director.
  • Ensure daily attendance and roster changes are recorded.
  • Assist in preparing and delivering daily healthy, nutritious snack.
  • Reinforce desirable behavior, not focusing on disruptive behavior so that all participants feel part of the program.

Program Description: The heart of the Kings Bay Y exists in the Main Office where community members learn about the many programs and opportunities within the facility.  The Main Office provides tours to potential and new members, informs members about existing, new and upcoming programs, communicates with all departments and staff regarding changes and/or policies, processes all paperwork and monetary transactions, and maintains an administrative environment within the agency. 

Responsibilities:

Program Description: The Kings Bay Y has been offering professional and caring respite services for people with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  The program consists of engaging activities such as recreational parties, games, exercise, music, dance, arts & crafts, therapy and discussions.

Accounting and Finance

Position: Accounting and Finance

Compensation:  Stipend available, College Credit is possible

Description: This internship provides a unique experience to observe and be part of a highly ambitious and successful non-profit organization.  The Accounting and Finance Intern position will help develop, interpret and implement financial concepts and also offers exposure to best accounting practices.   Interns will learn hands-on about how a non-profit organization runs. Interns will work directly with the Chief Financial Officer and Bookkeeper who will oversee their work, help identify goals, and support interns’ professional development. Interns will receive ongoing mentoring and training and have the opportunity to attend organization-wide events.   Interns may receive academic credit if an agreement is made between the organization and the intern's college or university.

Experience: No prior work experience required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 An ideal candidate will have general interest in Accounting and Finance in a non-profit setting and have the following qualifications:

Program Description: Rosh Hodesh: It’s a Girl Thing! is the first proactive, informal education program that uses Judaism to enrich the lives of girls. It draws on Jewish tradition to give girls a place to feel safe, articulate their questions and concerns, have fun, and be ‘real’ with their peers. Small groups of girls meet monthly. Through discussion, arts & crafts, and drama, the girls integrate core Jewish values as they focus on the things they care about most, such as body image, friendship, relationships, competition, stress, and family.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and submit curriculum and lesson plans in collaboration with the Program Director appropriate for population
  • Prepare materials and/or snack for program prior to program
  • Prepare curriculum and lesson plans for staff in event of absence
  • Communicate the supplies needed for each lesson plan to Supervisor
  • Facilitates program, activities
  • Reports to parents/guardians the overall behavior, attitude and functioning with program participants
  • Alert Supervisor if any kind of abuse/neglect is suspected.

Description: The Kings Bay Y provides special community-wide events held indoors, and outdoors.  These events are free of charge and give community members the opportunity to find out about programs, engage in a cultural Jewish experience (Purim, Hanukkah, Israeli Expo), while participating in family oriented games and activities.  These events are held annually.

  • Alert Director if any kind of abuse/neglect of a child is suspected.
  • Accompany staff and children on trips.
  • Assist Head Counselor and support staff in supervision of the group with regard to all camp activities and programs
  • Work with Recreational Supervisor to obtain supplies for activities and trips.
  • Escort campers to bathroom, vending machine, water fountain,
  • Delivery of snack to children during dismissals
  • Does not separate from Counselor in Training while on trips

IT Assistant

Position/Title: IT Assistant

Duration: Sunday-Friday, ongoing, hours vary

Organization: The Kings Bay YM-YWHAis a non-sectarian multi-service Jewish community center that serves Sheepshead Bay, Homecrest, Midwood, Bergen Beach and Mill Basin neighborhoods of Brooklyn, New York.  As the largest not-for-profit organization in the area, the Kings Bay Y offers social, cultural, educational and recreational services to people of all ages.

Description: Communication, marketing and outreach are the key components of effective programming and success of programming within the Kings Bay Y. 

Responsibilities:

  • Review and edit Internet based content (descriptions, blurbs, contact information)
  • Improve the efficiency of Kings Bay Y email database.
  • Marketing programs through face-to-face interactions.
  • Public Speaking.

Requirements:

  • No criminal record, felonies, or misdemeanors.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Knowledge of Windows XP/2000/Vista, Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher).
