Angela Ashraf, Parent Liaison / Youth Services Director
Angela lives in Staten Island with her husband, Alex and daughters, Diane and Raquel. At the Kings Bay Y, Angela serves as Youth Services Director and Volunteer Coordinator and she coordinates PJ Library. Angela graduated from Pace University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology but her real passion is working with children. She loves spending time with her children and cooking new and exciting meals for her family and friends.
Ayzik Shikh, Basketball Camp Supervisor of the Kings Bay Y’s summer basketball camp, came to the U.S. in from Ukraine, where he was a high school and college hoop star. In 2010 he founded the Brooklyn Lions, southern Brooklyn’s largest basketball program for kids and teens. Ayzik volunteers as delegation head of the Kings Bay Y JCC Maccabi program, which has participated in the last four JCC Maccabi games with great success, winning medals in several of them. He also co-founded a basketball exchange program between Toronto and Brooklyn, which launched in late 2016. Azkik graduated with an MS in Physics and Education from Chernivtsy University and lives in Sheepshead Bay with his wife and three sons.
Eugene Prokhin, Director of Aquatics
Eugene Prokhin participated in the Sydney Olympics in 2001 as a member of the Kazakhstan Men’s National water polo team. He began his water polo career in the Former USSR at the age of 8. When he was 15 he was invited to play for club Dynamo Almaty in Kazakhstan. He has played in the top water polo leagues for many years and his active water polo career included spots on the former USSR Senior National Team as well as the Men’s National Team in Kazakhstan. At the Kings Bay Y, Eugene serves as the Director of Fitness and Aquatics and is happy to bring his expertise to the summer camp.
Susan Kaminsky, Director of Preschool Summer Program
Susan has been part of the Preschool team at the Kings Bay Y since 1988. She started as a teacher and within a year had been promoted to Assistant Director of Early Childhood Education. In early 2004, Ms. Kaminsky became the Director of Early Childhood Education .
Ms. Kaminsky has a Master of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Brooklyn College and has taken additional credits in Special Education and in Reading. She is passionate about her school and her team. She is a strong proponent of an experiential, center-based program that gives young children plentiful opportunities to explore and experiment. She also directs the food programs that serve the children nutritious hot meals year-round, and she administers several other funded programs. Ms. Kaminsky has three grown children, three grandchildren, and a variety of grand-dogs, grand-cats and grand-guinea pigs. She has been a resident of the Sheepshead Bay area for her entire life. In her spare time you can find Susan watching sports, line dancing or at the beach.
Shirley Charles, Unit Director / After School Director
Shirley graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in Early Childhood Education. She has been a part of the Kings Bay Y family for over 10 years. Shirley began her career here as a summer camp and after-school counselor, then as the supervisor for the after school and summer camp, and finally her current position as the Director of the After School Programs and Off-Site Programs in 4 public schools. In her spare time, Shirley enjoys spending time with her 12-year old niece Victoria, and her mom. Shirley likes to read, scrapbook, and paint.
Gilad Kalifa, Israeli Head Shaliach/ PACK Sleepaway Camp Educational Director
Gilad is an Israeli theater director, producer and screenwriter for musical and dramatic theatre. He has written, directed, and produced several independent theatrical productions, and has written the original musical scores to accompany them. As comfortable in front of the camera as behind it, Gilad has had roles in over 30 productions as an actor, singer and dancer. In addition to owning and operating his own recording studio in Israel, Gilad is a talented musician who plays the guitar, piano, drums and harmonica. In his spare time Gilad collaboratively volunteers with staff and students for local high school productions and teaches music pro-bono at nursing homes and schools for the disabled in Israel.
Dara Fein M.S.Ed MHC-LP / Director of Special Needs Services
Dara Fein has been with the Kings Bay for 6 years and now serves as our Director of Special needs programming. She has her B.A. in psychology from Brooklyn College and her M.S.Ed in Mental Health Counseling from Hunter College. She has attended numerous trainings and workshops relating to the special needs population over the years and is a valued member of BASDI, the Brooklyn Autistic Spectrum Disorders Initiative. She came to us as a volunteer and through the years has risen in the ranks to head our special needs programs. Her creativity and dedication are unmatched as are the bonds she has formed with our children.
Tomer Kornfeld, Teen Director/CIT Program Director/Teen Camp Supervisor
Tomer Kornfeld is one of the newest additions to our staff here at the Kings Bay Y. Tomer is set to graduate in May from John Jay College of Criminal Justice with a BA in Law Society. Heavily involved in the pro-Israel world and camp life since about 9th grade, Tomer has worked at a variety of Jewish day and overnight camps. Tomer is our new Teen Director, Director of our Counselor in Training Program for this upcoming summer, and the supervisor of our Teen Camp. Tomer has made it his personal mission to inspire our campers to be the next generation of leaders in whatever field they may choose.
